How Tight Should an Apple Watch Be?

As the world becomes a smarter place, it is not surprising that so many companies are jumping on the bandwagon and making devices that are designed to make our lives easier. One of the most convenient products is the smart watch and Apple are among the leaders at the helm of this technological development.

Apple watches provide users with everything they need to monitor their health as well as access to their emails, text messages, and phone calls, all on the go. Yes, your smartphone can also do all of these things but it is nowhere near as compact and easy to carry.

If you are a fan of the Apple watch, you may have noticed that there is a lot of talk on the internet as to how loose or tight the watch should be. While many people may not see the importance of this, we must point out that when the watch is not worn at the correct tightness, it may not function as you would expect. Moreover, an overly tight watch can be massively uncomfortable and even stop your circulation.

In this guide, we wanted to give you all the information you need to know on Apple watch tightness. So, stop asking yourself how tight should my Apple watch be and check out our easy to understand guide.

How Tight Should Apple Watch Be?

1. Apple Watch 1st Generation

The First generation Apple Watch needs to be tight enough that it can accurately read your heart with the heart monitor feature. According to Apple this means wearing the watch so that it is snug but not uncomfortable. Moreover, this correct tightness means that the watch will be able to accurately use features such as Wrist Detect and Taptic function.

The 1st generation Apple watch comes in two case sizes (the case size is measured from the top of the device to the bottom) and two band sizes (S/M or M/L) so you should be able to find a comfortable fit. The smaller of the two case sizes is 38mm and is suitable for people whose wrists are between 5 and 6.5 inches, give or take. If you have a larger wrist that measures up to 8.5 inches then you may be better suited to the 42mm First Generation Apple watch.

2. Apple Watch Second Generation Series 1

Similarly to its predecessor, the Apple Watch Second Generation Series 1 comes in a 42mm case size. However, unlike the First generation, this is the only option. Therefore, this watch may be more suitable to people with a slightly larger wrist.

Again, you must make sure that the watch fits snugly on the wrist without moving around. You should be able to comfortably insert your index finger under the watch. If it is too loose, the Apple watch will not be able to take accurate readings.

3. Apple Watch Series 2

If you are looking for an Apple Watch with a choice of wrist sizes then the Apple Watch Series 2 brings back the 38mm option as well as the 42mm that both of the previous models boasted. This means that people with all wrist sizes will benefit from this watch but again, you should measure your wrist beforehand. If the measurement is up to 6.5 inches, you should go for the 38mm case for the best fit. Anything larger than this and the 42mm will give you optimal tightness.

As with the other watches from Apple, you must ensure that the watch retains a snug yet comfortable fit on the wrist. Much of this you will be able to tell from how the watch feels. If it feels too tight or too loose, then it probably is.

4. Apple Watch Series 3

The Apple Watch series 3 comes in a choice of two sizes; 38mm and 42mm, just like most of the previous models in the collection. However, the main difference here is that the screen is much larger and so those with very small wrists may find this a little too big.

In any case, you must ensure that the index finger can fit comfortably underneath the watch strap without it moving around. This will enable your watch to correctly and accurately read your heart rate and use functions like the Haptic Engine.

5. Apple Watch Series 4

When Apple released the Apple Watch Series 4, they decided to mix things up a bit and bring out two new watch sizes. This watch comes with either a 40mm case or a 44mm case making this much more suitable for people with very large wrists.

Once again, it is important to take measurements of your wrist to ensure that snug fit. Keep in mind that the larger size also means that the watch case will be slightly heavier and so may feel a little weightier on the wrist.

6. Apple Watch Series 5

As one of the heavier Apple watches at a little over 47 grams, the Series 5 also comes in the larger case sizes of 40mm and 44mm. While the watch may leave a slight impression when it has been worn for the entire day, it shouldn’t leave a long-lasting or noticeable mark. If this is the case, the chances are that you are wearing the watch too tightly.

For maximum comfort and effective functionality of the heart sensor and other features, be sure to wear the watch so that you obtain a snug fit that doesn’t cause pain.

7. Apple Watch Series 6

The next watch in the Apple watch collection saw no changes in terms of the case size, with a choice between 40mm and 44mm. Once again, those with a slightly larger wrist should opt for the 44mm. However, watches of this design are also compatible with a range of replacement straps from both Apple and other brands.

Many of the Apple replacement straps come in a variety of sizes giving you the freedom to find something that fits your wrist. Typically speaking, Apple sizes its bands in either small/medium or medium/large.

8. Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE is very similar in design to the Series 6 as both watches were released at the same time. There is no difference in size and so users can choose their watch tightness in exactly the same way.

However, the major difference between the two watches is that the Apple Watch SE is lacking in some of the more advanced features of the Series 6, meaning it has a markedly lower price tag. Where compatibility with replacement bands is concerned, the Apple Watch SE has a lot of choices allowing you to replace the strap with something that is more freely adjusted to optimal tightness.
